A federal judge has dismissed a $20 million lawsuit filed by the mother of a man who died by suicide in Cayuga County Jail, The Citizen reports.
The court ruled Sherri Williams didn’t prove the county denied medical care or committed cruel and unusual punishment.
Fred R. Williams Jr., 35, was found unresponsive in November 2022 after weeks of documented mental health issues.
A state report later said his death “may have been preventable,” citing lapses in psychiatric care.
Despite that, the court found the legal claims didn’t meet the threshold to proceed.
