The Athletics announced that they have selected the contract of infielder Jonathan Ornelas, a move that MLBTR covered earlier. To open an active roster spot, outfielder Colby Thomas has been optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas. In a corresponding 40-man move, right-hander Chen Zhong-Ao Zhuang has been designated for assignment. He threw 145 2/3 innings with a 4.08 ERA, 23.5% strikeout rate and 5.7% walk rate. Playing in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League might account for some of that but his 14.8% strikeout rate and 9.9% walk rate are both significantly worse than the year prior.
