Today, ARTICLE 19 honours the legacy of Irene Khan as she concludes her tenure as the UN Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression. Over the past six years, Irene Khan has made invaluable contributions to the promotion and protection of freedom of expression worldwide. In August 2020, Irene Khan was appointed as the Special Rapporteur and became the first woman to hold this essential post. Since then, Irene Khan has built on the work of previous mandate holders, while creating her own strong legacy. As Irene Khan finishes her term, we warmly welcome her successor Leopoldo Maldonado and look forward to continuing our steadfast support for the mandate.
