Ambassador Ferenc Kumin visited the town the week commencing on July 27, describing the trip as particularly meaningful, as the town was among the first places he visited after taking up the role. A keen cyclist, Mr Kumin said he had crossed the bridge many times during his time in the UK and wanted to return following its restoration. Marlow Bridge holds a special place in Anglo-Hungarian history. It is the only surviving original bridge designed by engineer William Tierney Clark, whose famous Széchenyi Chain Bridge in Budapest was destroyed during the Second World War and later rebuilt. The ambassador was welcomed by representatives from Marlow Town Council, Buckinghamshire Council and refurbishment project contractor Balfour Beatty during the visit.
