France has deployed an extra squad of police officers to patrol its north coast, but rather than stopping migrants, they will tackle a summer surge in tourism.
French police are paying for the extra deployment, which will comprise up to 16 new officers working between the small-boat hotspots of Calais and Boulogne.

Some officers will patrol the French coast on horseback, but not to deter migrants - Gareth Fuller/PAOfficials said of the new officers: "Since there is an increase in the population, we are obliged to increase the gendarmerie capacity."
Last Wednesday I saw French officers standing by doing nothing while people-smugglers launched boats.
