HollisAlgorithmiq and IBM announced on July 30 a joint demonstration of quantum advantage through the simulation of a heterogeneous quantum material, establishing a new framework for trusted quantum computations when classical verification is not possible. Eight months after releasing the problem and results via the Quantum Advantage Tracker, no classical method has reliably reproduced results across the full problem regime studied. The companies said this demonstrates that quantum computers can provide solutions more efficiently, cheaply, or accurately than leading classical methods—considered a key milestone in the field. This model was executed on an IBM Quantum Heron processor, allowing researchers to control microscopic couplings and observe how information propagates through regions with different local properties. To address trust issues in quantum computing results—traditionally verified against classical simulations—the team collaborated with experts in classical simulation.
