With infrastructure installed and its anchor ballpark next door, the first vertical, nonbaseball-related construction for the Diamond District development is officially underway. City leaders joined developer Diamond District Partners for a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday morning that kicked off work on Dōma, a six-story, 276-unit apartment building that’s the first of four new structures that will make up the massive mixed-use development’s first phase. Work also is set to start on a public park between the apartments and CarMax Park, which anchors the 67-acre Diamond District site. “Our commitment to the vision of the Diamond District is resolute and unwavering.” At the Diamond District, Ebert said incremental tax revenue generated from the apartments and other privately financed development would be used to pay off the $170 million in bonds that the city took out to fund CarMax Park and the public infrastructure.
