AB 1776 would expand California antitrust law to target monopolization and monopsony, potentially giving farmers more leverage against dominant buyers and suppliers. That tension is driving agriculture’s debate over Assembly Bill 1776, Assembly Majority Leader Cecilia Aguiar-Curry’s COMPETE Act. Yet some of California agriculture’s largest organizations are opposing the bill, including California Farm Bureau, California Fresh Fruit Association, California Food Producers, California Strawberry Commission, California Walnut Commission and Dairy Institute of California. Antitrust attorney Abiel Garcia, testifying for the bill, pushed back on warnings that AB 1776 would unleash lawsuits against ordinary businesses. CAFB has warned that AB 1776 could create questions around legitimate practices like cooperative price discovery.
