By Steve NeavlingThe Trump administration’s effort to detain millions of immigrants without bond suffered two more legal defeats Thursday, as federal appeals courts in California and Illinois rejected the sweeping policy, Politico reports. Circuit Courts of Appeals found that the administration misread federal immigration law when it sought to impose mandatory detention on immigrants arrested inside the country, including many who have lived in the U.S. for years and have no criminal records. The majority in the 9th Circuit found that mandatory detention generally applies to people apprehended at the border or shortly after entering the country, not longtime residents with families, jobs, and other ties to their communities. Six federal appeals courts have now rejected the administration’s interpretation, while the 5th and 8th circuits have sided with the government.
