About 59 emergency sirens owned by Constellation in Ogle County will be phased out in the coming years, Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle said July 29. Storm sirens are very expensive and they’re not the best way to notify people of an ongoing incident. Upkeep on the emergency sirens is about $3,000 per year per siren, VanVickle said. Whether it’s notifications through the OgleSafe app or the IPAWS system or a weather radio, you have to have that knowledge to prepare for your safety. Because the Byron Nuclear Plant is within its limits, Ogle County has more emergency sirens than most counties like it.
