Tonga And IFAD Reaffirm Four Decades Of Partnership As New US$19.4 Million Rural Innovation Project Gets Under WayJuly 30, 2026The Government of Tonga and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) this week reaffirmed their partnership spanning more than four decades with the launch of the new phase of the Tonga Rural Innovation Project (TRIP), a US$19.4 million investment to improve rural livelihoods for 128 rural communities across Tongatapu, Vavau, Eua, Haapai, Niuafoou and Niuatoputapu islands.
Speaking at the launch, Prime Minister Fatafehi Fakafanua said: “TRIP III demonstrates the government’s commitment to ensuring that national development reaches rural communities throughout Tonga.
It brings government, development partners, civil society and communities together in a partnership founded on trust, respect and shared accountability”.
Since then, IFAD has invested in six projects in Tonga with total financing of US$53.1 million, including US$22 million from IFAD.
