Its candidates have won local elections by exploiting the views of voters who share this obsession, notably in Hackney, where the Green candidate, Zoë Garbett, won the mayoralty in May. Hackney has one of the largest Charedi Orthodox Jewish communities outside New York and Israel. But for Garbett, they are apparently there as fodder for her to demonstrate her commitment to the cause of Palestine. Garbett’s letter informed her Israeli counterpart that the twinning would potentially end, citing the so-called Israeli genocide.
