The Tower of London’s moat could be turned into a wildlife-friendly wetland, and all thanks to a Victorian tunnel. It was the Duke of Wellington, as Constable of the Tower, who ordered the moat to be drained, and barring the occasional accidental flooding, it’s been dry ever since. When the moat was drained, they installed drainage tunnels beneath it to remove rainwater, and those drains are still in place. Originally, they ran all around the moat, but the connection to the north was broken by a WWII bomb. Permission has been granted for the changes, which form part of a £70 million upgrade of the Tower facilities.
