A remarkable building that many people will walk past, itching to see what it looks like inside, now offers occasional tours. This is the former Carlton Cinema on Essex Road, once the largest cinema in the UK, with an interior very much as you would hope if you get a chance to see it. And occasionally, a local cinema tour guide, Nigel Smith, has permission to take people inside. But it’s a pretty rare chance anyway to finally step foot through those doors, and see the unrestored upper stalls as well as hear the history of the cinema. The cinema is a few minutes walk from Essex Road station (Great Northern) or a modest walk from either Highbury and Islington or Angel tube stations.
