According to the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the National Highway accident data, compiled through the Electronic Detailed Accident Report (e-DAR) portal, indicates a consistent reduction in highway accidents over the past five years. However, the broader road safety scenario continues to remain a matter of concern. It stressed that road safety requires coordinated action involving engineering improvements, stricter enforcement, public education and faster emergency medical response. The Centre also informed Parliament that the PM-RAHAT (Road Accident Victims’ Hospitalization and Assured Treatment) scheme, launched earlier this year, is aimed at ensuring cashless treatment for road accident victims. Neighbouring Ladakh reported comparatively fewer accidents, with 119 National Highway crashes claiming 17 lives and injuring 177 persons during 2026.
