Burlington man charged with hate crime after attack on woman wearing hijab

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – South Burlington police say a downtown attack Tuesday was a hate crime.
Police say Jonathan Strippe, 52, of Burlington, assaulted a woman on Market Street who was wearing a hijab and damaged her cell phone.
They say he also made several derogatory statements about her perceived race, religion and country of origin.
A witness captured part of the attack on video, police said.
Strippe faces a slew of charges, including simple assault, unlawful mischief, and hate-motivated crimes.
