The federal government’s Smartraveller service has updated its travel advice after the 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture on Tuesday, killing at least 30 people and injuring dozens more. Officials are warning travellers that strong aftershocks remain a risk, with more than 100 already recorded since the initial quake. “Check the Japan Meteorological Agency for earthquake and tsunami information and follow the Japan National Tourism Organisation for earthquake safety tips.” Search and rescue operations remain underway, with crews combing through collapsed buildings in the hope of finding survivors. Smartraveller has reminded Australians travelling to Japan to also prepare for dangerous temperatures during the northern hemisphere summer.
