byWard Farnsworth is an old favorite around here; see my reviews of his Farnsworth’s Classical English Rhetoric (LH, The Millions) and Farnsworth’s Classical English Metaphor (LH). That’s the premise of the book: to let you learn Latin by reading and understanding lots of short specimens of the real thing. It can also teach you to understand and appreciate Latin if you don’t have years to spend on it. This book is especially written to help learners of Latin who like the ideas of the Stoics (another treat for the mind). You’ll have read some actual Latin the Romans wrote, which was probably your goal from the start.
