If successful, the city could receive up to $250,000 in grants, which would be matched by the city’s annual $50,000 contribution over five years. City council has given the nod to staff to apply for funding that would increase the city’s tree canopy over the next five years. The application will be inked to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities Fund Growing Canada’s Community Canopies Tree Planting stream. Staff have identified the funding “as a strong opportunity to build on this existing investment and significantly expand the city’s annual planting capacity,” a report to council states. In effect, the funding could double the city’s tree planting program for the next five years and allow the city to also plant in the fall as well as spring.
