Transportation Security Administration officers at Gulf Shores International Airport in Alabama discovered five historic cannonballs in a passenger’s checked bag after an X-ray operator initially mistook them for oversized medicine balls, WKRG News 5 reported. Because it was unclear whether the cannonballs still contained explosives, TSA called in explosives specialists and the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office. The cannonballs proved inert, but deputies determined they had been taken from nearby Fort Morgan, the historic coastal fort that guarded the entrance to Mobile Bay, according to the station’s report. Officials said the passenger had no idea how the cannonballs came to be removed from the fort, and deputies returned the artifacts to the fort.
