At least 34 people died trying to cross from Morocco into Spain’s Ceuta enclave during a massive surge this week in illegal migration, local regional president Juan Jesús Vivas told reporters on Friday. Vivas said around 60,000 people had crossed into Ceuta during the influx, many by swimming around a border barrier stretching into the water. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez visited Ceuta on Friday and said his country had suffered a “violation”. “What has happened has been an attack, a violation of Spain’s territorial integrity,” Sánchez told reporters. He pledged Spain’s full support to Ceuta’s nearly 85,000 residents.
