What began as a suggestion from a family friend has quickly turned into a national championship for Roslyn High School student Kristen Zheng.
The 15-year-old, who will enter her sophomore year this fall, captured the Division III women’s épée national title on July 6 at the USA Fencing Summer Nationals & July Challenge in Portland, Oregon.
“I think about enjoying it more than I think about winning,” Zheng said.
Zheng was introduced to fencing during the summer before eighth grade after a family friend encouraged her to try the sport.
“I really enjoyed the style of épée fencing,” Zheng said.
