The federal government will stump up $4 million to commission a pre-feasibility study for a new oil refinery in Perdaman, WA.
The petrol refinery would be Australia’s third, adding to existing facilities in Brisbane and Geelong, and the first domestic refinery to be constructed since the 1960s.
Announcing the funding decision in Karratha on Tuesday, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen said the project would strengthen national energy security and create thousands of jobs.
