A suspected deliberate fire in woodland at St John's Park in Ryde was quickly extinguished by firefighters this afternoon (Wednesday). A crew from Ryde Fire Station was called to the wooded area between East Hill and West Hill Road at around 2.30pm following reports of a fire. Firefighters prevented the blaze from spreading to nearby bushes and undergrowth, bringing it under control using buckets of water and knapsack sprayers. The incident has since been handed over to Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary, with police confirming the fire is being treated as suspected arson. The incident comes just days after a major wildfire destroyed 22 acres of heathland at Headon Warren in Totland over five days.
