Volunteering may be changing, but its value remains strong in Strathcona County, says Wendy Bouwman Oake, executive director of Volunteer Strathcona. While residents remain committed to helping one another, she said the reasons people volunteer are evolving. “These days people are more likely to be saying, ‘What might I get out of volunteering?’” Rather than viewing that change negatively, Bouwman Oake said organizations need to better communicate what volunteers gain from the experience. Volunteer Strathcona has focused on reducing those barriers through flexible opportunities and personalized support.
