Liberal policy over the last decade has made an absolute mess of our immigration system. We can also see how the failure to manage the immigration system well has really sharpened domestic divisions and tensions. We had relatively high immigration levels, but the government put a major emphasis on aligning immigration with our employment needs. After 2015, immigration numbers surged, and the government trumpeted a post-national philosophy that deemphasized a shared national identity. It was not immigrants who broke the immigration system; it was the government.
