NYON, Switzerland – UEFA member associations have unanimously agreed to boycott the FIFA World Cup and all other FIFA competitions if the global governing body proceeds with plans to sell stakes in a company that will manage its tournaments.
In a statement, UEFA said no national team under its umbrella would participate in FIFA competitions unless the proposal was completely abandoned and binding guarantees were provided that FIFA would never again seek private ownership of its governance structures or tournaments.
UEFA argued that the World Cup represents one of football’s greatest sporting traditions, built over generations by players, national teams and supporters, and should never be treated as an investment product.
The Football Association (FA) of England endorsed the decision, saying it stood “shoulder to shoulder” with its European counterparts.
The dispute casts uncertainty over several upcoming FIFA tournaments, including the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil and the inaugural FIFA Under-15 World Cup, scheduled to be held in Azerbaijan later this year.
