Brazilian President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva has confirmed that his government has denied visas to two US officials who planned to travel to Brazil, accusing them of trying to interfere in October’s election.
“We had to deny visas to two young folks they were sending to Brazil to meddle in Brazil’s elections,” Lula said on Wednesday.
Brazil’s election will pit the 80-year-old incumbent left-wing President Lula da Silva against Flávio Bolsonaro, son of Jair Bolsonaro, a former president who was handed a 27-year prison sentence for plotting a coup after losing the last election.
He once notably cast doubt on the integrity of Brazil’s election system to a room full of foreign diplomats.
Flávio Bolsonaro’s claims about the country’s electronic voting machines have been refuted by Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court.
