Some of the soldiers viewed the act as a direct affront to the unit's spirit and identity, Israeli publication, Israel Hayom reported. The soldiers from the Givati Brigade's Tsavar Battalion left the Sde Teiman base without authorization, becoming absent without leave. "Being absent without leave, going to prison, none of that matters," one soldier involved in the protest said. Following the incident, the soldiers left the base with only their personal belongings, leaving their weapons and other military equipment behind.
