Yesterday, the first GB Railfreight (GBRf) Class 99 hybrid locomotive entered commercial service. 99001 marked a milestone in the decarbonisation of the freight network as it departed DP World London Gateway, heading to Maritime’s Hams Hall Rail Freight Terminal. Emissions are anticipated to be reduced by over half the typical journey, and these locomotives are key to meeting government carbon goals. The locomotives run on both electrified routes and non-electrified routes using renewable fuels, offering a solution without waiting for the entire rail network to be electrified.
