A parent may know the burden is too heavy, but social pressure makes retreat feel impossible. Even when people speak against dowry, the social pressure survives in disguised forms. Families need courage to say no to wasteful customs. A modern marriage in Kashmir need not imitate the loudest social trends. Young couples can set a new standard by openly preferring simplicity and refusing to let marriage become an arena of competition.
