The University of Kashmir’s elevation to Category-I status by the University Grants Commission is a moment worth celebrating, not only for the institution itself but for Jammu and Kashmir’s higher education landscape as a whole. There is also a larger message here for the higher education system in the Union Territory. It shows that excellence is possible, but it requires institutional honesty, academic seriousness and sustained support from all stakeholders. The role of the Chancellor, Pro-Chancellor and the higher education department will remain important, but the responsibility now rests equally on the University’s leadership, faculty and students. The University of Kashmir now has the space, the status and the opportunity to redefine its role in the region and beyond.
