The 1968 song Jack Antonoff called the “greatest recording” everThe Beatles spawned innumerable musicians and artists in the wake of their world domination back in the 1960s, but they also inspired multiple future generations of music producers and engineers, like Jack Antonoff. Alongside their utterly incredible songwriting, though, came the production innovations carved out by the group and their sonic architect, George Martin. In particular, Antonoff has always been fascinated by ‘Happiness Is a Warm Gun’, the John Lennon-penned track that closed out Side One. “This is the greatest recording ever made,” he continued, waxing lyrical about the band’s fearlessness in piecing those disparate fragments together into a song that, on paper, shouldn’t work. That reaction will no doubt be familiar to anybody who can recall their first time listening to The Beatles: “There’s nothing like it.”
