July 29, 2026 By E. C. DalyAbbVie announced on July 29 that the European Commission has approved RINVOQ (upadacitinib) for the treatment of adults and adolescents aged 12 years and older with severe alopecia areata. This approval provides another option for patients who continue to navigate physical and mental burden associated with severe alopecia areata, often overlooked due to stigma." Alopecia areata is described as an unpredictable autoimmune disease causing various patterns of hair loss across the body. Both doses of RINVOQ (15 mg and 30 mg) met primary endpoints regarding scalp hair coverage at week 24; key secondary endpoints were also achieved. The UP-AA results based on stringent endpoints demonstrated clinically meaningful scalp hair regrowth and improvements in eyebrows and eyelashes in 24 weeks, supporting RINVOQ as an important new treatment option for severe alopecia areata patients in Europe."
