The boss of defence giant BAE Systems has called on Andy Burnham to set out a ‘clear pathway’ to achieve Nato spending targets as the new PM faces questions over his commitment to rearm.
Charles Woodburn welcomed Burnham’s pledge to meet a Nato goal of spending 3.5 per cent of national income on defence by 2035.
The comments will pile pressure on Burnham to set out in more detail how he will accelerate spending on keeping Britain safe, as threats grow.
Defence Secretary Wes Streeting has declined to commit to the 3 per cent target, but pledged he will not try to do defence ‘on the cheap’.
It’s day ten for the new premiership and the fact he’s up here in Barrow with new Defence Secretary Wes Streeting I think is really important.
