Despite growing global trade policy uncertainties, the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, says nearly three-quarters of global trade continues to operate under the organisation’s rules-based framework. According to her, global services trade also recorded impressive growth of 5.3 percent, while digitally delivered services expanded by nearly six per cent. She explained that an additional 16 percent of world trade is conducted within the broader WTO framework through bilateral and regional trade agreements that are built on WTO principles. Highlighting the growing influence of developing economies, Okonjo-Iweala said South-South trade now accounts for about one-quarter of global trade, up from less than one-tenth in 1995. According to her, 22 economies that are not yet members of the WTO are actively pursuing accession to the 166-member global trade body.
