John Legend is headed back to the big screen, this time portraying one of music and civil rights’ most towering figures. The EGOT winner has joined the cast of director Bill Condon’s The Road Home as Harry Belafonte, the late singer, actor and activist whose influence loomed large over the events surrounding Paul Simon’s landmark 1986 album Graceland. Before Simon departed for South Africa, Belafonte urged him to seek the blessing of anti-apartheid leaders first — a recommendation Simon ultimately did not follow. “I was honored to know Mr. Belafonte as my friend mentor and collaborator in the struggle for justice,” Legend said of Belafonte, who died in 2023 at the age of 96. I count it a privilege to be entrusted with the role of Harry Belafonte in this special film.”
