National Highways said it received reports of a fuel spill at around 11.50am on the eastbound carriageway between junction 4 at the Travellers' Rest roundabout and junction 3 near Newent. Shortly before 1pm, traffic cameras showed road workers had closed the eastbound entry slip road onto the motorway from the A449 at the Travellers' Rest roundabout, with no vehicles able to join the M50.
