The announcement comes as river levels in Herefordshire remain extremely low and reservoir stocks over the border in the Elan Valley continue to decline after a prolonged spell of dry weather. Natural Resources Wales (NRW) extended the drought declaration nationwide on July 30, following an earlier declaration in north Wales and the Upper Severn catchment. Herefordshire, where a drought has also been declared , is feeling the impact, with the River Wye recorded at around 11cm at Bredwardine, 12cm at Belmont, and 33cm at Mordiford. The Elan Valley reservoirs, which supply water to support flows in the River Wye during dry periods, are also showing signs of strain. The River Wye could receive extra water from the Elan Valley during periods of extremely low flow, but NRW has not yet decided whether to trigger a support release.
