The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has called for stronger collaboration among electricity regulators to ensure effective consumer protection and build public confidence as Nigeria implements reforms under the Electricity Act, 2023. He noted that while the Electricity Act, 2023 decentralised electricity regulation by allowing states to establish their own regulatory commissions, consumers expect a seamless system that protects their interests regardless of jurisdiction. The FCCPC boss stressed that the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), the Nigeria Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA), State Electricity Regulatory Commissions (SERCs) and the FCCPC have distinct but complementary responsibilities that must be coordinated to achieve effective consumer protection. “It is a message that underscores the importance of consumer protection in the electricity sector. The stakeholder engagement brought together the FCCPC, NERC, NEMSA and State Electricity Regulatory Commissions to strengthen institutional cooperation and improve consumer protection in Nigeria’s evolving electricity sector.
