שְׁמַ֖ע יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל יְהֹוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵ֖ינוּ יְהֹוָ֥ה ׀ אֶחָֽד׃וְאָ֣הַבְתָּ֔ אֵ֖ת יְהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ בְּכׇל־לְבָבְךָ֥ וּבְכׇל־נַפְשְׁךָ֖ וּבְכׇל־מְאֹדֶֽךָ“Hear Israel, HaShem is our God, HaShem is one. And you should love HaShem your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your might” (Devarim 6:4). And again “And you should love HaShem your God and keep the laws and commands all the time” (Devarim 11:1). And do all the commands to love, mean the same thing? Throughout our history, our understanding of what we mean by God (let alone what we mean by loving God) has varied.
