A portrait of Executive Council of Australian Jewry co‑chief executive Alex Ryvchin has won the 2026 Archibald Prize People’s Choice Award, giving public recognition to a work shaped by Jewish identity and the aftermath of the Bondi Beach terrorist attack. A record 45,769 people voted in this year’s competition, and Zavros said he was grateful for the public response. His mother once mistook Ryvchin for him on television, and several friends later remarked that the two men looked alike. The portrait was made in early January, only weeks after the December 14 terrorist attack on a Jewish Chanukah gathering at Bondi Beach. Ryvchin was born in Kyiv and came to Australia as a child, while Zavros has Greek Cypriot and Irish heritage.
