Asian currencies traded in narrow ranges on Thursday as investors assessed the U.S. Federal Reserve’s decision to keep interest rates unchanged while Fed Chair Kevin Warsh reinforced the central bank’s commitment to bringing inflation back to target.
His remarks supported expectations that U.S. interest rates could stay elevated for longer, helping the U.S. dollar recover from overnight losses.
Among Asian currencies, the Singapore dollar was little changed after Singapore announced a SGD900 million support package to help households and businesses manage rising costs linked to geopolitical uncertainty.
The announcement followed the Monetary Authority of Singapore’s recent decision to slightly steepen the appreciation path of its exchange rate policy band.
The Japanese yen hovered near multi-decade lows, with USD/JPY trading around 163.5 ahead of Friday’s Bank of Japan policy decision.
