A newly identified dinosaur species discovered in northern Zimbabwe is reshaping scientists' understanding of early dinosaur evolution in southern Africa. The fossil, dating back about 210 million years, suggests that different dinosaur species occupied distinct ecosystems rather than sharing a single, uniform environment. The dinosaur, named Musango matusadonaensis, was unearthed from rocks along the shores of Lake Kariba and represents only the fifth dinosaur species identified in Zimbabwe. According to the Natural History Museum, the evidence indicates that southern Africa consisted of several distinct ecosystems, each supporting different dinosaur species rather than a single, shared dinosaur community. While Mbiresaurus raathi represents one of the continent’s earliest known dinosaurs, Musango matusadonaensis provides additional evidence from a later stage of the Late Triassic, when dinosaurs were continuing to diversify across different environments.
