Ugandan opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye has been admitted to an intensive care unit after collapsing during his treason trial in Kampala, prompting renewed concern over his health and calls for his release on humanitarian grounds.
Besigye was rushed under heavy security to Mulago National Referral Hospital, Uganda’s largest public health facility, where he was admitted to the intensive care unit.
She said the family had little confidence in government medical personnel and claimed Besigye had refused treatment from state health workers.
If convicted, Besigye could face the death penalty, as treason remains a capital offence under Ugandan law.
