(Beyond Pesticides, July 30, 2026) A study published in Environmental Pollution identifies honey bees (Apis mellifera) as bioindicators for residues of pesticides, heavy metals, and rare earth elements (REEs) that can cause adverse health effects to pollinators and other organisms. Pesticides, heavy metals, and REEs are able to affect organisms at different concentrations. The detection of this fungicide in the forest suggests that pesticide drift from surrounding agricultural areas enters the honey bees’ foraging radius. “Physiological, developmental and behavioural side effects have been reported in honey bees exposed to trace concentration of heavy metals.
