The House of Representatives recently passed the Kids Internet and Digital Safety (KIDS) Act, a combination of various pieces of legislation dealing with protecting children from online harms. While the bill is supposed to protect children, it erodes online privacy for all users via a de facto requirement websites require users to verify their ages. In 2018, Congress passed the Allowing States and Victims to Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act. However, the prohibitions were so broad that they affected those who advocated for and tried to help sex workers. Fortunately, new legislation is not needed to protect children from the worst parts of the internet.
