In one way, at least, this feels like a weirdly appropriate time for Winamp to rise from the dead. Similarly, the late 1990s and early/mid-2000s were a strange, transitional era for both music and the technology used to play it. Internet connections and speeds weren’t yet up to the challenge of streaming music, and in any case, the music industry was deep in the throes of hoping the whole internet thing would just go away. Well, in 2017, a company called AudioValley bought a majority stake in Radionomy; in 2022, AudioValley was renamed TargetSpot; in 2023, TargetSpot was renamed Llama Group; and in 2025, Llama Group was renamed Winamp Group SA. It’s hard to say whether Winamp ’26 might be that something because no one’s seen it in action yet.
