CARPHA Expands (AMR) Surveillance with Introduction of (WGS)The Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) has enhanced regional laboratory capacity for detecting, monitoring, and responding to antimicrobial resistance (AMR) through the introduction of whole genome sequencing (WGS) at the CARPHA Medical Microbiology Laboratory (CMML) in Port of Spain, Trinidad. As part of CARPHA’s regional reference laboratory network, CMML supports disease surveillance, outbreak investigations, and public health response across Member States. By strengthening our ability to detect resistance genes, track transmission patterns, and support outbreak investigations, this technology will significantly improve the quality of AMR surveillance and the public health support CARPHA provides to countries across the Region”. Building on this milestone, CARPHA will continue to strengthen regional genomic surveillance networks and support Member States in AMR detection and reporting. CARPHA Member States can now refer isolates to any CARPHA campus to access the WGS service.
