Global pharmaceutical company Johnson & Johnson (J&J) agreed to pay more than $5 billion to resolve remaining lawsuits that allege its use of talc in baby powder caused cancer. The proposed resolution aims to bring a close to 15 years of litigation. The company also noted in the news release that it has settled nearly all talc litigation, including lawsuits that stated its talcum powder contained asbestos and caused mesothelioma. “Studies show talc is safe, does not contain asbestos, and does not cause cancer,” J&J said in the news release. In 2022, J&J announced it would halt global sales of talc-based baby powder by 2023 and transition to an all cornstarch-based baby powder portfolio as it continued to battle lawsuits.
